Intense Old School Tuna Fishing

Check out this mesmerizing video of Tuna fisherman in the 50′s? 60′s? I’ve been trying to find the source, but there doesn’t seem to be any information on it. My best guess is somewhere in the Pacific………Any guesses people?

Thanks to my brother-in-law Vahid for the link.

What a video. Thanks Vahid and Owen. Definitely in the Pacific as they mention getting skunked off the Galapagos and the head home to San Diego. Some of the fishermen were wearing steel military helmets and others were bare-headed. Those flying hooks and fish look dangerous. There must have been some people hurt in the making of this movie.

I wonder how they preserved the fish. Tuna are warm blooded (in a non-mammalian sense) so they need cooling pretty fast to preserve them. Maybe a freezer?

This fishery was replaced by huge seiners that fished nets a mile long and ended up carrying helicopters to find the fish. They fished the stocks down and moved around the world to other grounds, they also fished into the stone age.

    What amazing footage!
David, I did some reading and found that in most cases tuna were frozen in brine at sea… I’m not sure if that’s the case with this particular boat, but you’re right, they’d have to move quickly to avoid spoiling such a huge haul.

Well if there is one thing my dear father-in-law loves, its a good brine! All praise be to Butter on the Endive! Thank you Owen and Naomi for your hospitality and the gift of great food and drink. V.

The narration is a mix of Hemingway, drunk, and the Rickards’ bartender.
