Vancouver Street Food: A Glimmer Of Hope
Well, this is encouraging.
Porchetta and roast chicken cart at the Ferry Building in San Francisco.
Just read an article in the globe and mail by Ian Bailey about the food cart scene in Portland, Oregon. Man, do they ever have some great sounding vendors on their streets: Thai, Mexican, Egyptian, Italian, vegan……..the list goes on. On a particularly exciting note, Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson is quoted as saying:
“Cities like Portland are way ahead for us on this, so we’re looking hard at how to catch up and make sure we have great food offerings on our streets.”
He also says City Hall is taking a look at the issue in the very near future and hopes to have new food on our streets later this year. This is genuinely exciting news. I really hope no bureaucratic bullshit gets in the way of this becoming a reality.
If this does go through, I am really interested in opening a sweet food cart. I have lots of ideas and just need some capital. Contact me and we can hash it out.

This is great news! I just spent a week in Portland and ate at a different street cart everyday. They also offer terrific value… especially the Thai stands. There’s even one called the Swamp Shack that offers tasty Jambalaya and other creole specialties.
I’m excited to see if Gregor can make it happen.
This is retarded.
This is very encouraging. Vancouver does indeed have much catching up to do. Stupid laws are in place that need updating. It’s shameful that a city that tries to be so worldly and has such a diverse cultural base has such limited options on food. It is nice that places like japadog try to do interesting things with these limited options, but it’s still sad that we can’t have more. would love to see street side noodle stops, or tacos.
I have always wondered what the rules are and suspected it was limited to hot dogs. What exactly are the issues with other street food being offered?
