Something I Learned Today About Buffalo Mozzarella

December 3, 2009

The mafia is ruining it for everyone.

So I was at work today, just doing the list and contemplating life, when I heard some really sad news. You may or may not have heard already, but the buffalo mozzarella industry in southern Italy is having a rough year. Last year health authorities found high levels of dioxins in the cheese. The product, the best of which is from Campania, is being fucked by the mafia, who are using the countryside to dispose of large amounts of toxic waste. The liquid that the mighty water buffalo are drinking in some areas is now so full of nasty shit that it is filtering into the cheese. Check out this post on the The Lede [NYT] from last year for more.

So now the price is going up, and the product is inconsistent, and it’s off the menu, and we’re all fucked.

I try really hard not to get totally down on the human race because obviously there are some good ones out there but we truly are a plague on the planet and here is another example. I am totally depressed now. I better get my t-shirt soon.

yet another reason to buy local! mozzarella di bufala from natural pastures in the comox valley – authentic hand-made mozzarella made of 100% buffalo milk from fairburn farm, home to the only canadian herd of water buffalo.

Good job humans..no fish in less than 40 years, and now no tasty cheese.

This has been around for years now, the quality of waste disposal in that part of italy suffers greatly due to the lack of funds from the government. IE the cows eat trash and shit.

I have never tried it…what’s the difference compared to regular Italian mozzarella? Does it taste a bit like Jimmy Hoffa? :-)
